The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Centre for Reproductive Rights released a new report on “The Rights to Contraceptive Information and Services for Women and Adolescents.” Although women’s and adolescents’ right to contraceptive information and services is grounded in internationally recognized human rights – including the right to life, the right to the highest attainable standard of health, the right to decide the number and spacing of one’s children, the right to privacy, the right to information, and the right to equality and non-discrimination – in many countries women and adolescents are still confronted with legal, financial, informational, and other barriers. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said Friday she was deeply concerned about the extremely harsh sentence handed down to Chinese activist Liu Xianbin on Friday, and noted the worrying increase in imprisonments, house arrests and other restrictions on lawyers and human rights defenders in China over the past 18 months. Liu Xianbin was sentenced to10 years in prison on the charge of "incitement to subvert state power" after writing a series of articles calling for democratic reforms. "The extremely harsh sentencing of Liu Xianbin confirms the severe limits being imposed on freedom of expression in China, and is another example of the escalating clampdown on the activities of human rights defenders," Pillay said. “It runs counter to recent statements by China’s leadership recognizing the need for reform.” (...)
The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in February 2011 released the report “Minority Rights: International Standards and Guidance for Implementation.” The report highlights that the rights of minorities, although defined in international human rights law, are far from being realized, particularly the rights of minorities that are victims of armed conflict or internal strife. In general, minorities, whether ethnic, religious or linguistic, continue to experience discrimination and may lack access to services, land and property, or even nationality, the report notes. (...)

Il 19 marzo 2010, quando la madre di Andrei Zhuk è andata nel carcere del Minsk, la capitale della Bielorussia, per portare del cibo al figlio condannato a morte per omicidio, le è stato detto di tornare indietro, di non andare più a fargli visita e di aspettare una notifica del tribunale. Tre giorni dopo, è stata informata che suo figlio e un altro detenuto nel braccio della morte erano stati uccisi con un colpo alla nuca e che il corpo non le sarebbe stato restituito né le sarebbe stato detto dove era seppellito. Come documenta il recente rapporto di Amnesty International sulla pena di morte nel mondo nel 2010, la Bielorussia non è stata sola nella triste classifica dell'omicidio di stato. Decapitazione, impiccagione, fucilazione, iniezione letale e sedia elettrica: la mano del boia nel 2010 si è resa responsabile, secondo i dati ufficiali, di 527 esecuzioni in altri 22 stati, senza contare le migliaia di esecuzioni probabilmente avvenute in Cina, dove la pena di morte è ancora un segreto di stato. Insieme alla Cina, Iran, Corea del Nord, Arabia Saudita, Stati Uniti d'America, Yemen, sono stati tra i paesi che più frequentemente hanno fatto ricorso alle esecuzioni. (...)
