Il clima di tensione e le accuse di frode aumentano oggi in Haiti, dopo l'annuncio dei risultati elettorali preliminari, che conferiscono la vittoria presidenziale al cantante Michel Martelly.

Recentemente Muhammad Yunus, premio Nobel per la pace e pioniere della microfinanza, è stato estromesso con effetto immediato dalla 'sua' Grameen Bank. Secondo alcune fonti, Yunus è finito nel mirino del governo che lo accusa di evasione fiscale, mentre per altri l'ostilità dell'esecutivo nei suoi confronti sembra risalire al 2007, quando a seguito di un golpe militare il banchiere manifestò l'idea di creare un suo movimento politico. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Centre for Reproductive Rights released a new report on “The Rights to Contraceptive Information and Services for Women and Adolescents.” Although women’s and adolescents’ right to contraceptive information and services is grounded in internationally recognized human rights – including the right to life, the right to the highest attainable standard of health, the right to decide the number and spacing of one’s

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said Friday she was deeply concerned about the extremely harsh sentence handed down to Chinese activist Liu Xianbin on Friday, and noted the worrying increase in imprisonments, house arrests and other restrictions on lawyers and human rights defenders in China over the past 18 months.
Liu Xianbin was sentenced to10 years in prison on the charge of "incitement to subvert state power" after writing a series of articles calling for democratic reforms.
"The extremely harsh sentencing of Liu Xianbin confirms the severe limits being imposed on freedom of expression in China, and is another example of the escalating clampdown on the activities of human rights defenders," Pillay said. “It runs counter to recent statements by China’s leadership recognizing the need for reform.” (...)
