New UNEP Report - “The Environmental Food Crisis: The Environment’s Role in Averting Future Food Crises”

Speaking at the launch of the report “The Environmental Food Crisis: The Environment’s Role in Averting Future Food Crises,” UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director Achim Steiner stated that reversing environmental degradation and investing in ecological infrastructure such as forests, soils and water bodies is part of the Green Economy solution.

Noting that the economic models and management approaches of the 21st century will not support a growing world population, Steiner stressed the need to manage nature-based inputs, in particular the food and agriculture chain, in more efficient and sustainable ways.

At the launch event, which took place on the side of the 17th session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) in New York, US, he also pointed to opportunities to diversify livelihoods and incomes via the emerging carbon markets, including renewable energy and income from conserving forest, soil and vegetation cover to sequester carbon.(...)

The report on the environmental food crisis provides an overview of how environmental stresses such as climate change, water stress, invasive pests and land degradation may impact food prices and world food security, and proposes a seven-point plan to reduce the risk of hunger and rising food insecurity in the 21st century. UN-DESA: Achieving sustainable development in an age of climate change

Sustainable development in developing countries is directly influenced by climate change and related policies. This policy note by the Committee for Development Policy of UN-DESA (United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs) compares two mitigation strategies, the “cap-and trade system approach” and the “investment approach”. It argues that the latter should be favoured over the other when it comes to developing countries as it brings technology support, as well as opportunities for the adoption of regulatory instruments, and for research and education. The report concludes that there is an urgent need for large-scale global funds to finance the transfer of technology required for mitigation and to cover adaptation costs.

Esiste ancora il buco dell’ozono?

Negli anni ’80 e ’90 i media parlavano incessantemente del buco nell’ozono e dei pericoli che esso comportava per l’uomo. Da qualche tempo, invece, il problema è praticamente scomparso dai giornali, poiché numerosi scienziati assicurano che l’ozono si sta ricostruendo e tornando come prima. Tuttavia, un recente studio dimostra che “le cose non sono così semplici”: l’ozono è influenzato anche da altre emissioni umane. Il buco dell’ozono sarà anche scomparso dai giornali, ma non è certo svanito dalla realtà. Una nuova ricerca dimostra che se l’ozono si ricostituirà, lo farà in modo estremamente irregolare: non tornerà mai come era prima che l’uomo lo influenzasse attraverso le sue emissioni.(...)

Convention de Stockholm sur les polluants organiques persistants

Ministres et fonctionnaires de 150 gouvernements se réunissent cette semaine pour faire avancer les efforts mondiaux visant à débarrasser le monde de quelques-unes des plus dangereuses substances chimiques produites par l'humanité.

La conférence marque un nouveau chapitre dans l'histoire de la Convention de Stockholm. Pour la première fois, neuf nouveaux produits chimiques seront proposés pour être ajoutés à la liste déjà existante dans le cadre de la Convention. Ces substances recommandées pour inclusion sont utilisées comme pesticides, retardateurs de flamme et pour d'autres utilisations commerciales. (...).
