L'alto tasso di deforestazione tropicale non è dovuto alla povertà, poiché le popolazioni locali incidono poco sugli abbattimenti, ma è causato principalmente dall'esportazione industriale operata proprio da quei Paesi che l'«Economist» definisce ricchi e in miglioramento rispetto alla deforestazione. Ovviamente, dopo aver distrutto per decenni intere foreste per costruire ferrovie e infrastrutture, i Paesi «ricchi» attingono a piene mani da quelli «poveri» per garantirsi le risorse naturali.
