The 2012 Education for All Global Monitoring Report Youth and Skills: Putting Education to Work shows how vital it is to ensure that all young people have the skills they need to prosper. “Creating jobs on its own is not going to stop youth unemployment. Young people still need the skills to do them,” explained Pauline Rose, Director of the Education for All Global Monitoring Report, in a press release.
Across the world, 200 million young people leave school without the skills they need to thrive, contribute in society and find jobs. About 71 million teenagers are not attending secondary school, missing out on vital skills for future employment. This does not only jeopardize economic growth and social cohesion, the report argues, but also leads to growing frustration among youth. It is a mutual loss for both nations and individuals. The report further shows that progress towards reaching the Education for All (EFA) goals – a set of targets to which over 160 countries committed themselves in the year 2000, is slowing down. (...)
