OHCHR - Monitoring the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

“It is estimated that over 650 million people, 10 per cent of the world’s population, have a disability. Eighty per cent live in developing countries. Some women, men and children with disabilities are fully integrated in society, and are participating in and actively contributing to all areas of life. However, the great majority face discrimination, exclusion, isolation and even abuse.”
The Office of the High-Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) recently launched a new publication that aims to provide actors already engaged in human rights monitoring such as UN human rights officers, national human rights institutions, and civil society with background information on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), its provisions and monitoring mechanisms.
According to Navanethem Pillay, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, in the foreword of the report “Human rights monitoring can play a key role in supporting States to effectively implement the Convention at national level and in empowering persons with disabilities to become increasingly aware of their rights, therefore bringing about positive change in the lives of persons with disabilities across regions."
