Sixty-nine countries around the world have already signed up to the reduced emissions from deforestation and forest degradation programme, or REDD, under which forest owners are effectively paid not to cut down trees. About $5.5bn (£3.4bn) has been pledged by governments to the scheme already.
However, to reach its 2020 target, UNEP estimates that between $17bn and $30bn a year is needed. Governments alone cannot provide this kind of money. "The problem cannot be solved without the private sector," Mr Mitchell says. Barring resistance from a few isolated participants, including most notably Bolivia, most people seem to agree with him.
In fact, last year a US government paper proposed that its $1bn contribution to REDD should be conditional on private sector support. Market mechanisms, therefore, will be the key to REDD's success. (...)

Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono inked into law on Thursday a two-year moratorium on new permits to clear primary forests, part of a $1 billion deal with Norway that could spur projects to cut emissions and slow expansion of plantations.
The moratorium ordered a freeze on new permits to log or convert primary forests and peatlands -- worrying palm oil, timber and mining firms in Southeast Asia's biggest economy -- but not going far enough for environmentalists. (...)

L'Europa sta consumando troppe risorse naturali. Metalli, minerali, legno, acqua, suolo "non sono infiniti" e bisogna ridurne l'uso. E' la Commissione europea a lanciare l'allarme mettendo sul tavolo i suoi diktat per uno sviluppo economico più sostenibile dei 27: risparmiare, riciclare, riutilizzare. Ma non solo. Anche .
L'obiettivo dell'Ue è chiaro, "incanalare lo spreco e la perdita di risorse naturali entro il 2020" e "migliorare lo stato attuale delle risorse naturali entro il 2050". Mete "raggiungibili", dice Bruxelles, attraverso la "corretta attuazione delle leggi già esistenti", con "sistemi di mercato mirati" e potenziando "ricerca e innovazione". A portare la voce della Commissione europea oggi a Roma è stata il direttore alla Natura, Biodiversità e Uso del Territorio della Direzione Generale Ambiente, Pia Bucella, nel corso di un brain storm promosso dalla Rappresentanza in Italia della Commissione Europea. L'incontro ha scandito il via alla road map europea sull'uso efficiente delle risorse, tema di punta per la Commissione europea nella strategia 'Europa 2020'. Un tema che sarà al centro della Green Week 2011, il più grande appuntamento annuale sulla politica ambientale dell'Ue che prenderà il via a Bruxelles dal 24 al 27 maggio prossimi. (...)

An international study, led by Rosalinda Gioia at Lancaster University (United Kingdom) and published in the journal 'Environmental Science & Technology', has shown that high concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) - between 10 and 360 picograms/m3 - are found in some countries in West Africa, such as the Gambia and Ivory Coast, and all along this coast. "We were not expecting to find such high levels of (PCBs), highly toxic compounds that are considered as priority compounds by European legislation, in a region such as the western coast of Africa", Ailette Prieto, a researcher at the University of the Basque Country and co-author of a study published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology.
