United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Rural People

A first meeting of the “Open-ended intergovernmental working group on a United Nations declaration on the rights of peasants and other people working in rural areas” took place in Geneva from 15 to 19 July 2013. In her opening statement to the Working Group, Ms Flavia Pansieri, Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, noted the challenges rural people have to face, particularly highlighting volatile food markets, skewed trade practices, climate change, environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity and the lack of rights to manage the land on which they live and work.
